The case for a mini PC
A unified-memory mini PC gives a local model more room than any consumer graphics card, in a box that draws well under 200W. For anyone whose priority is model size rather than generation speed, this is currently the best value in local AI hardware.
Usable AI memory decides what a machine can load at all, and memory bandwidth decides how fast it answers once loaded. Those two numbers matter more than the processor name on the box. A machine with a large unified pool and modest bandwidth will run a very large model slowly; a machine with a fast narrow pool will run a small model quickly and refuse a large one outright.
Where they disappoint
Bandwidth is modest next to a discrete card, so a model small enough to fit a graphics card will run faster there. Memory is soldered on nearly all of these machines, so buy the capacity you will want in two years, not the one you need today.
Ryzen AI Max or GB10
The Ryzen AI Max machines are the value choice: a large pool, decent bandwidth and prices that start well under the alternatives. The GB10 machines cost more and give you slightly more usable memory with the full CUDA software stack behind it, which is worth a lot if your tooling assumes NVIDIA.
