What Strix Halo changed
Ryzen AI Max put a 256-bit memory bus and a 40 compute unit graphics processor in a package that fits a mini PC. The result is a machine that hands a local model up to about 96GB, which no consumer graphics card can match, at a price that undercuts every alternative with comparable memory.
The 75% rule
Windows hands the graphics processor roughly three quarters of system memory by default, so a 128GB machine offers a model about 96GB and a 64GB machine about 48GB. On Linux the allocation can be pushed higher, to around 110GB of 128GB, and that is worth knowing before you choose an operating system for one of these.
Usable AI memory decides what a machine can load at all, and memory bandwidth decides how fast it answers once loaded. Those two numbers matter more than the processor name on the box. A machine with a large unified pool and modest bandwidth will run a very large model slowly; a machine with a fast narrow pool will run a small model quickly and refuse a large one outright.
Where they fall short
At 256 GB/s these machines have roughly a seventh of the bandwidth of a top-end discrete card. A model small enough to fit a graphics card will run faster there. Memory is soldered, so the capacity you buy is permanent.
