The band where discrete GPUs appear
Twenty-four gigabytes is the first point where a dedicated graphics card and a unified-memory machine meet on capacity, and they behave nothing alike. A 24GB mobile RTX card delivers this memory at roughly 900 GB/s. A Mac or Ryzen AI Max machine reaching the same figure does so at a quarter of that. Same number on the spec sheet, very different experience.
A 14B model at Q4 fits comfortably here with room for a long context, and a 24B model fits if you keep the context modest. This is the band where local coding assistance stops feeling like a demo.
Choosing between the two routes
Take the discrete card if your models are small and you want answers quickly, especially if image generation is part of the plan. Take the unified machine if you expect to grow into larger models, because the card's 24GB is a wall and the unified machine's is a slope.
