The awkward middle
Around 64GB of usable AI memory is a narrow band, and that is visible in how few machines land here. Configurations tend to cluster either side of it: a 64GB unified machine gives about 48GB and lands lower, while a 128GB machine gives about 96GB and lands higher. Reaching this band usually means an unusual configuration rather than a mainstream one.
What it buys is a 49B model with comfortable context, and a 70B model only with offload, which costs more speed than most people expect.
Consider the bands either side
If a 70B model is the goal, this band will frustrate you and the 96GB band will not. If a 32B model is the goal, the 48GB band does it for less money. The honest advice on this page is that it is usually better to step up or down rather than land here deliberately.
