The band that runs a 70B model properly
Ninety-six gigabytes is the point where a 70B model at Q4 fits entirely in memory with room left for a long context, and it does so without the offloading that makes a 70B model painful on smaller machines. For a great many people this is the band where local AI stops involving compromises they notice daily.
Reaching it means unified memory. A 128GB Ryzen AI Max machine or a 128GB Mac both land here, as does a GB10 machine from slightly above. There is no consumer graphics card anywhere near this figure.
The speed you accept
These machines hold a 70B model at bandwidths between roughly 256 and 614 GB/s, which produces a readable but unhurried stream of text rather than an instant one. That trade is the entire proposition of this band: capability you simply cannot buy from a graphics card, at a speed you have to be willing to live with.
